LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club skipper Benn Challen helped his former side Clymping maintain their Invitation League title hopes with a crucial innings at Southwick on Saturday.
With Littlehampton not playing in Sussex League Division 2, Clymping captain Gareth Challen brought in brother Benn and Chris Green from Littlehampton, and Benn struck 60 not out after Clymping had slipped to 16-4 and 41-5 chasing 117 to win.

He shared a 78-run unbroken stand with Aussie Andy Danson to guide Clymping to a much-needed 30 points. They moved back up to second in the table but are still 26 points behind leaders Broadwater, who cruised to a 88-run win over Ram.

Gareth Challen said: "We still had batting to come, and I'd like to think that we'd still have won if Benn hadn't played. Someone else would have had to apply themselves.

"But since the first three or four games, our side has kept changing, and this week we took the opportunity to play Benn and Chris Green.

"And they both played at Clymping for a lot longer than they've been at Littlehampton. We wouldn't have played anyone else from Littlehampton, apart from maybe Chris Kirkham, who used to play here, too."

It was the first time Benn, Gareth and their father Paul had played in the same team since Benn left Clymping for Littlehampton six years ago. But he has played a couple of other league matches for Clymping in that time.

After putting Southwick into bat first on a slow wicket, Karl Pierce took four wickets and James Salisbury and Danson two each as Wickers were all out for 116 in their penultimate over.

On the title race, Gareth Challen said: "I think we can still win it but the next two matches, when I'm unavailable, are very important.

"We play Selsey and Wisborough Green and need to win both. With Broadwater having their free week on Saturday, we can go back ahead of them and put some pressure back on them.

"But, at the moment, they just keep getting 30 point wins and I don't know how they keep doing it.

"We won four or five successive matches at the start of the year, but they were 26 or 28 point wins.

"Horsham Trinity are also still up there too, and I don't think there's anything at all between the top three."
