The Woodland Burial Ground is managed for the benefit of wildlife and will not be maintained in the manner of a traditional burial ground. Headstones are not permitted and only biodegradable coffins or cremated remains urns may be used. Wildflowers will be encouraged and the whole area will become a living memorial to those laid to rest there. The second area is a traditional burial ground, where headstones of a specified size and materials as well as floral tributes are permitted. Cremated remains may also be buried here. No artificial flowers are allowed. An area for strewn ashes has been identified in the Woodland Burial Ground. From Horam/Hailsham, from the A267, turn right onto the B2203 through Horam High Street. Continue through Maynards Green, past the Runt-in-Tun public house on the right and the entrance to the site is shortly after on the left hand side. From Heathfield (High Street), turn into Station Road, follow to the traffic lights at the Prince of Wales public house. Turn right into Hailsham Road (B2203) and a short distance from the Ghyll Road turning the site entrance will be found on the right hand side. Turn into the site and follow the access road through the allotments area. The burial grounds are located at the rear of the site, either side of the cart lodge building. SINGING: Singing for Fun for Everyone continues on Monday at 2pm. Well known favourite songs. We have a conductor and pianist. To be held at Cross in Hand Methodist at the top of Fir Grove Road. Parking on the left in the car park. Refreshments included. We just cover expenses. HEATHFIELD FARMERS MARKET: This is held on the third Saturday in the month, 9am to 12.30pm, Co-Op car park. Fresh local produce and arts and crafts on sale. HISTORY SOCIETY: At the opening meeting of the New Year the members enjoyed a light hearted look at The History of Women and Motoring from 1885 to 1960 with Anna Astin. Despite the disadvantages of long skirts, corsets and the prevailing social attitudes many women took up motoring in the Edwardian period. From Bertha Benz in Germany and Camille du Gast in France to Dorothy Levitt in England women were breaking taboos and taking part in motor racing. Women also developed innovations for cars such as semaphore signals (indicators) and windscreen wipers. It wasn’t long before film stars like Garbo and Dietrich saw the value of publicity photographs in a car and advertisers the value of a pretty face to sell their cars. The two world wars in the twentieth century gave women the opportunity to play their part by driving ambulances and even tanks. VOLUNTEER CENTRE: Volunteer for a Brighter Heathfield. A group of residents, concerned about the amount of litter in and around Heathfield, have decided to start a clean-up campaign. Alternatively it would be great if you just cleared up the rubbish on the streets and verges in the vicinity of your home. It takes no more than a carrier bag and a disposable glove and five minutes of time to transform your local environment. Let’s do something about it and start to be proud of where we live.
