Eastbourne day centre holds dementia support sessions through February

Ivy House Day Centre, on Hartfield Road, is running in-person support sessions for families and carers who support loved ones with dementia on three occasions in February – Saturday 6 at 11am-12.30pm, Monday 8 at 10am-12pm and Wednesday 8 at 10am-12pm.

Jane Lowe, the founder of Ivy House said, “We are a unique dementia club in the heart of Eastbourne focusing on providing advice and support to improve the lives of families living with dementia.”

The house has specialists on site to give care during the day, it provides respite for primary carers and organises activities too.

Jane said, “There is no formal routine in the house and it is carefully arranged to resemble and feel like a family home. People take part in cooking and preparation of meals.

“They are supported and guided to paint, sing, dance and to go for walks. Some enjoy darts and pool, take part in woodwork or pottery whilst others help maintain the garden.

“Alongside these more formal activities the team engage people in conversation, play simple games with them and focus closely on helping the people who come to Ivy House to retain their existing skills. All this happens within the boundaries of a support plan specifically developed to the needs and desires of the individual.

“At Ivy House the team recognise that everyone’s condition is different as is their character and personality and the nature of their lives and experiences. It makes for a unique vibrant space.”
