The Olympic spirit was burning brightly in both Chichester and Emsworth as the countdown to the 2012 event gets under way.
Olympic handover flags were raised at the Emsworth Museum and Westgate Leisure Centre yesterday (Sunday, August 24) afternoon, as more than 500 venues across the country joined the celebrations when the games was handed over from Beijing to London.

In Emsworth, young athletes from Havant Athletics Club took to the streets of the town with a 1936 Berlin Olympic torch before 1992 tennis Olympian Chris Wilkinson raised the flag outside the museum in North Street.

Meanwhile in Chichester the Olympic handover flag was raised at Chichester's Westgate Leisure Centre with the city's sporting stars joining the celebrations.

West Sussex residents also joined the celebrations with a series big picnics around the county, including at the Weald and Downland Museum, connected by a symbolic baguette baton passed from picnic to picnic.
